At Royal Canal Adventures we specialise in creating tailor made self-guided walking or running holidays along the Royal Canal. We can create bespoke getaways that include a combination of walking, cycling and cruising on a canal boat. If you want to soak in the local culture after a day’s trek, we can arrange a variety of activities from traditional Irish music lessons to pottery workshops.
Ireland’s Royal Canal Greenway is Ireland’s longest off-road walking and cycling trail at 130km. The Royal Canal passes through 5 counties, Dublin, Kildare, Meath, Westmeath and Longford. It begins in Ireland’s capital city and runs deep into the rural Irish Midlands. Although the Dublin section of the canal is not a designated greenway as it is not fully open to cyclists, walkers and runners are in luck. It is possible to enjoy 144.45km of off-road trail from Newcomen Bridge, Dublin City to Cloondara, Longford on foot.
The Royal Canal is made to be explored. It cuts through towns and villages steeped in history and overflowing with culture. It traverses rural Irish countryside abounding in natural beauty. The Canal’s towpaths have no sharp ascents or descents making the Greenway accessible to walkers and runners of all abilities.
We booked a walking tour with Royal Canal Adventures and it was absolutely amazing! The walk was incredible & they gave us loads of tips on great stop offs along the way. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for adventure in the fab Irish countryside!
Had a great tour with Royal Canal Adventures in a lovely part of Ireland, the whole midlands area really is a hidden gem. We did some walking but also some running (trying to get fit again!) and the path beside the canal was mostly flat and easy to jog along. Loads of scenic and historical spots along the way, perfect for picnics, some nice pubs as well for the end of the day. Brendan was brilliant, really hospitable and a mine of information, would do another trip and would definitely recommend!
Had a lovely few days along the Royal Canal thanks to Brendan. He organised a brilliant tour for my friends and I including running and walking. We got to explore a part of the country that we hadn’t seen before and were so glad that we did! It’s such a beautiful, underrated area and the Greenway itself is great. Brendan had the logistics to a tee so everything went really smoothly.
Loved it!! What a great day out. Got the chance to see some great scenery and some cool sights along the canal. Thanks for organising a great adventure. See you soon for some more royal canal runs!!
